Introduction to the Shooting Sports

Original Mentor Page

In the effort to promote responsible gun ownership and rights awareness, I make the following open offer to any resident or visitor in the Evansville, IN area:

If you have never shot a gun and would like to try, I am willing to take you shooting free of charge. I will provide the firearms, ammunition, eye/ear protection and I will cover your range fees. I guarantee if you are on the fence about gun ownership and usage, you will not be at the end of the session. You will have fun and learn a little in the process.

Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to meet at one or the other!

If you live in a different area, please check this map for mentors that may be in your area.

MHI Review

Apparently all of the cool bloggers are reviewing Monster Hunter International, MHI, written by Larry Correia and currently published by Baen Books. If you're lucky enough to have one of the original self- published copies that Larry put out about this time last year, make sure you keep ahold of it. Rumor has it that the self-published copies were drawing outrageous prices on eBay recently.

The reviews are almost entirely good. Everyone who reads the book has good things to say about it. Me included. I literally can't recommend the book to enough people, and have loaned my copies out several times.

Larry is also running a way to purchase an autographed copy and patch, if you'd like to do that. I need to do it one of these days.

So anyway, what is this book about? Start here, monsters are real, And the government is trying to keep it very hush hush, they don't want ordinary citizens learning the truth. Enter Owen Zastava Pitt (he shares a last name with another book protagonist that I love) who manages to throw his boss out of a fourteenth story window in the first chapter. And it gets better from there.

The gun play is excellent, and written in such a way that even if you are not a gun nut, it makes sense, and won't bore you too much. The action sequences hit hard, and then take you through a roller coaster ride. Right up to the very end, you're not sure how it's all going to turn out.

And I won't ruin it for you. But I will strongly suggest that you pick up your own copy and get it read before the sequel is released!!

As always, specific questions in the comments section below.

San Antonio Blogmeet

A bunch of the bloggers from the central / southern Texas areas are meeting at the Braken Rifle and Pistol Recreational Range just to the North East of San Antonio. The group is meeting at 0900 on Saturday 02-07-2009, but I'm driving down the night before.

From what I'm gathering, it looks like I'm going to have to pay for each gun that I want to shoot. I've never been billed for a range that way, so it'll be interesting to see. I've offered to the host of the meet to bring up to 7 different firearms, as seen in the pictures below.

I'm planning on bringing the following:
  • Bushmaster AR-15, 5.56mm
  • Henry .22LR Lever Gun, .22LR
  • Ruger 22/45 Mark III, .22LR
  • Ruger Single Six, .22 LR
  • Glock 19 with CT grips, 9mm
  • Springfield XD45 Service, .45ACP
  • Kimber Custom TLE II/ RL with CT grips, .45ACP

And I laid the rest of my supplies in today for the blogmeet. I visited Champion Firearms in College Station and picked up the following:
  • 200 rounds .45 ACP
  • 100 rounds 9x19
  • 200 rounds .223 Rem
  • 50 rounds 7.62x25
  • 40 rounds 7.62x54R
Also picked up a Serpa holster for XD45, a package of snap caps, and a set of Radians Electronic Muffs. I'll post a review of the new muffs after I get a chance to try them out at the blog meet.

Unfortunately, Champion was SOLD OUT of .22LR ammo. As a gun shop, how do you sell out of ammo for a .22? I headed over to Gander Mtn and picked up 1000 rounds of .22LR for the Henry and Ruger pistols.

Anyway, if you live in the San Antonio area, or want to make the trip, you're more then welcome to join everyone who's going to be there. Just for the record, I have never met any of the guys who are meeting up before.

ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ!

Amen Dude!

And I'd be willing to bet that push come to shove, and the chips are down, I know how it would turn out.

Politically Incorrect

I've always hated the idea of being politically correct. I understand why it is necessary in this day and age (translation: to keep myself out of trouble) but I don't enjoy having to do it.

With that all said, please enjoy the following politically incorrect (at least in this day and age) picture.

For those of you who aren't aware, that's a Bushmaster AR-15 with 30 round PMag and an EOtech HWS and a Glock 19 with Crimson Trace laser grips, a Glock light, and a 33 round Glock mag.

Both are a TON of fun to shoot.

Holy Rolling Ground Batman!

For those of you a little less in touch with the Southern Indiana area of the world, we were all rudely awakened from a deep sleep this morning at about 0437 but an earthquake. It registered about 5.4 on the Richter Scale.

Everyone at home is safe and sound. More later.

Update # 1
And once again, Tam beat me out of the gate!!! Even though she slept through the events! See what 150 or so miles gets you! She also reports that there are no zombies, and it must not have been that big a deal, she still has internet connections! I guess it's not TEOTWAWKI after all! Sure was a new experience for me thought!

Quotes Collection

Quotes collected from all over the place. I don't remember where they all came from, but each of them means something to me.

Greater love hath no man then to lay down his life for another...

Guns Save Lives. EMT's Save Lives. But...
EMT's With Guns Scare People!

"Live life with lights and sirens blaring"

"Never do anything that you wouldn't want to explain to the paramedics."

"Always do sober, what you said you'd do drunk. That'll teach you to keep your mouth shut!"

Guns Save Lives. EMT's Save Lives. But...
EMT's With Guns Scare People!

"Laugh all you want, but when the zombies come we both know whose house you will be running to for protection."

When the anti-gunner got to heaven he asked, "God, why didn't you protect me from that violent criminal?" God replied "I made you a citizen of a free country with law abiding armed citizens, and you worked to take that right away. What did you expect?"

Senior SOF Editor Don McLean came up with an objective definition of “Political Correctness” as”…a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream medal, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

Jumba: Don't worry, is all part of plan. We are professionals. Hey! Get that out of your mouth! - Reminds me of some of the people I work with...

"When you long for a life of ease remember diamonds are made under pressure."

--you may never need a gun, but if you do...you will need it more than anything you've ever needed in your life.

--if you "need" a gun...you have a problem, if you don't have one...your problems just got a lot worse.

Life is short...
break the rules.
forgive quickly.
kiss slowly.
love truly.
laugh uncontrollably.
and never regret anything
that once made you smile...

"Never regret something you did, because at one point, it was exactly what you wanted."

"In your darkest hour, never worry that there is no hope for the future. The most extraordinary thing about this life is that YOU are the author of your own destiny, and you get to decide what's in the next chapter."

"Courage is not the absense of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear"

The best years of our lives are the hardest, the most complicated, and the most unusual. The years when experience continuously knocks on our door, but the lessons are buried among time. We struggle to understand not only ourselves, but also all that surrounds.

It's the soldier, not the reporter,
Who gave us our freedom of the press.
It's the soldier, not the poet,
Who gave us our freedom of speech.
It's the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who gave us our the freedom to demonstrate.
It's the soldier, Who salutes the flag,
Who serves others with respect for the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protestor to burn the flag."

"But I, being poor, have only my dreams. I have spread my dreams under your feet. Tread softly because you tread on my dreams."
